kyaikhtiyo Pagoda

Kyaikhtiyoe Pagoda also known as Golden Rock, is a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Myanmar. After the Shwedagon Pagoda and Mahamuni pagoda, Kyaik Htee Yoe Pagoda is the third most important pilgrimage image site in Myanmar. Kyaik Htee Yoe Pagoda  has been built, is about 25 feet (7.6 m) in height and has a circumference of 50 feet (15 m). The Pagoda above the rock is about 7.3 metres (24 ft) in height.  According to the legend, this relic is a hair of Gotama Buddha given to a hermit residing on the mountain by the Buddha himself as he was returning from the second heaven of the Nats whither he had gone to preach the law to his mother. Then the hermit enshrined it in the stupa on top of the rock. The rock and the pagoda are located at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo. Kyaik Htee pagoda is not only the famous pagoda in Myanmar but also the most interesting for the tourists. Kyaik Htee Yoe pagoda is situated at an elevation of 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) above mean sea level, on top of the Kyaiktiyo hill (also known as Kelasa hills or Eastern Yoma mountains).  The driving hours to the base of Mt.Kyaiktiyo (Kinpun village) is 5 hours drive 210 kilometres (130 miles) from Yangon. Kinpun village is situated 16km (10 miles) from Mt.Kyaiktiyo. Starts from the base camp at Kinpun, any private vehicles are not allowed to travel. So you have to take the hiking truck from Kinpun village to a last point for vehicular traffic (Yatetaung) which is located at the midway of Mt.Kyaiktiyo. From the bus terminal (Yatetaung), all of the pilgrims and visitors have to climb of 1.2km up to Kyaik Htee Yoe pagoda(Golden Rock) on foot. It will take about one hour to reach Kyaik Htee Yoe pagoda(Golden Rock). On the way to Kyaik Htee Yoe Pagoda from Yataetaung bus terminal, you can also enjoy the beautiful scene of natural environment between the mountains. Near the top of the mountain, there are two large lions guarding the entrance to Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. Start from there all of the pilgrims and visitors must take off their footwear and go barefoot because of Buddhist religious culture.
