Pyay, also known as Prome, is a town in the Bago Region in Myanmar. Pyay is located on the bank of Ayeyarwaddy River and is far 260 km (160 mi) from northwest of Yangon.The district of Pyay encompasses the valley of the Ayeyarwady, located between Thayetmyo, Hinthada and Tharrawaddy districts. Along the western side of Pyay District are the Rakhine Yoma mountain ranges, and along the eastern side are the Bago Yoma mountain ranges. Pyay District’s main towns are Pyay, Shwedaung, and Paungde.
Shwe San Daw Pagoda
The Shwe San Daw Pagoda is the landmark of Pyay. Shwe San Daw means the Golden Hair Relics. It is situated on the eastern bank of Ayeyarwaddy River and Myanmar’s most venerated structure stands here. The pagoda contains a series of five terraces, topped with a cylindrical stupa, which has a bejewelled umbrella (hti). It has a height of 127ft (39m) high and standing on the plinth making a total measurement of 290ft (88m) from the base. It was built by two merchant brothers Azzika and Phanllika with the help of King of the Dagons Etrapatha, King of the Ogres Sambhu and King of Devas Sakka on the Sudassanan Hill in Tabaung(Pisees) in 589 B.C. Enshrined within the pagoda are four strands of sacred hair as well as eight other relies of Gautama Buddha.
Akauk Taung
Akauk Taung is located about 19 miles downstream from Pyay. There are dozens of Buddha images at Akauk taung. The mountain is named for the crafty foll-takers from the mid-19th century, who spent the hours between taxing boats by carving reclining and meditating Buddhas into the steep cliff.
